Thesaurus

On this page, I am not trying to duplicate what a thesaurus is intended to do.  A thesaurus, as well as a dictionary, are good tools for use in studying the Bible.  Obviously, there is no need for me to produce another dictionary or thesaurus.  Rather, I want to document where I find the Scripture acting as its own thesaurus.  When we find the Scripture itself using different words to convey the same meaning, it strengthens our understanding and assurance about what God is saying.

A synonym (or antonym) can be revealed by the parallelism that is an element of Hebrew poetry.  It can also be revealed by comparing how one English version translates a word with how another English version translates it.  It can also be revealed by examining the marginal notes that the NASB and other English translations provide.

Many of the connections shown below will seem simple and obvious, but it is the simple things that most need strengthening.

If the word for the far left (i.e. the word being listed) is hyperlinked, the link is to a post defining the word.  An ~ indicates that the verse to the left of it should be compared with the verse to the right of it to establish the connection, whether synonym or antonym.
