Well, Spring, Stream, River…

Subsidiary post:  The Well of the Living One Who Sees Me

Related post:  Spiritual Food and Drink

Words related to this post:  cistern, fountain, mist, river, spring, stream, wadi, well

The subject of this post is water that arises from below (i.e., from the earth) as opposed to water that comes from above (i.e. from heaven).  We see this distinction in Genesis 1:7, 8, 9.  Water from above would included, of course, rain and snow (e.g. Isaiah 55:10); waters from below are the subject of this post.

John 4:10-14

John 7:37-39

Revelation 22:1, 2

Genesis 2:5, 6  –  “…for the LORD God had not sent rain upon the earth, and there was no man to cultivate the ground.  But a mist used to rise from the earth and water the whole surface of the ground.”

Genesis 26:12-33  –  Jacob’s wells.

Numbers 21:17  –  “Then Israel sang this song: ‘Spring up, O well! Sing to it!'”

Job 6:15  –  “My brothers have acted deceitfully like a wadi, like the torrents of wadis which vanish,”  –  See note on Jeremiah 15:18 below.

Psalm 1:3  –  “…like a tree firmly planted by streams of water…”  –  Note similarity with Jeremiah 17:5-8 below.

Proverbs 4:23  –  “Watch over your heart with all diligence, for from it flow the springs of life.”

Isaiah 43:18, 19, 20  –  “…I will do something new, now it will spring forth; will you not be aware of it?  I will even make a roadway in the wilderness, rivers in the desert…I have given waters in the wilderness and rivers in the desert, to give drink to My chosen people.”

Jeremiah 2:13  –  “…They have forsaken Me, the fountain of living waters, to hew for themselves cisterns, broken cisterns that can hold no water.”

Jeremiah 14:3  –  “…they have come to the cisterns and found no water…”

Jeremiah 15:18, 19  –  “…Will You indeed be to me like a deceptive stream with water that is unreliable?…”  –  The “deceitful wadi” of Job 6:15 and the “deceptive stream” of Jeremiah 15:18 are almost identical metaphors.  See also the note on Amos 5:24 below.

Jeremiah 17:5-8  –  “…like a bush in the desert…like a tree planted by the water, that extends its roots by a stream…”  –  Note similarity with Psalm 1:3 above.
….
Jeremiah 17:13  –  “…because they have forsaken the fountain of living water, even the LORD.”

Amos 5:24  –  “But let justice roll down like waters and righteousness like an ever-flowing stream.”  –  Contrast “ever-flowing stream” with the “deceitful wadi” of Job 6:15 and the “deceptive stream” of Jeremiah 15:18.
