Under the old covenant, sleep is a metaphor for death; under the new covenant, there is no more sleep.  Rather, death is a doorway into the life to come.

Spiritually speaking, to be spiritually asleep is to be spiritually dead – and in need of awakening.  Likewise, we ought not to be drowsy (Colossians 4:2).

Notice in these verses that sleep and death are used interchangeably.
