Or, “Proud.’

This is a subsidiary post of Humility or Pride.

Contrasting post:  Humility

*Romans 12:3 – “not to think more highly of himself than he ought to think; but to think so as to have sound judgment…”

*Philippians 2:3 – “Do nothing from selfishness or empty conceit, but with humility of mind regard one another as more important than yourselves”

James 4:6 (quoting Proverbs 3:34)  –  “…’GOD IS OPPOSED TO THE PROUD, BUT GIVES GRACE TO THE HUMBLE.'”

1 Peter 5:5, 6, 7 (quoting Proverbs 3:34)  –  “…clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, for ‘GOD IS OPPOSED TO THE PROUD, BUT GIVES GRACE TO THE HUMBLE.’  Therefore humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God…”

1 John 2:15, 16, 17  –  “…the boastful pride of life…”

Psalm 131:1  –  “…my heart is not proud, nor my eyes haughty…”  –  With this kind of thinking, it’s easier to adopt the “perplexed, but not despairing” posture of 2 Corinthians 4:8.  (That is, we should think in this way: “I should not expect to understand things I’m not capable of understanding or don’t need to understand at this point in my spiritual life.”  To demand otherwise is to depart from humility.)

Proverbs 16:18  –  “Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before stumbling.”
Proverbs 16:19  –  “It is better to be humble in spirit with the lowly than to divide the spoil with the proud.”

*Habakkuk 2:4  –  “”Behold, as for the proud one, his soul is not right within him; but the righteous will live by his faith.”
