When we turn from going our own way to following Christ, we begin to experience an opposition we did not previously know.

An asterisk indicates a verse that references “opposition” without using that precise word or a cognate of it.

*Matthew 5:11  –  “Blessed are you when people insult you and persecute you, and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of Me.”

*Matthew 5:44  –  “…love your enemies…”

*Matthew 10:34-36 (quoting Micah 7:6 below)  –  “Do not think that I came to bring peace on the earth; I did not come to bring peace, but a sword.  For I came to SET A MAN AGAINST HIS FATHER, AND A DAUGHTER AGAINST HER MOTHER, AND A DAUGHTER-IN-LAW AGAINST HER MOTHER-IN-LAW; and A MAN’S ENEMIES WILL BE THE MEMBERS OF HIS HOUSEHOLD.

Luke 2:34-35  –  “…this Child is appointed for the fall and rise of many in Israel, and for a sign to be opposed…”

*Luke 6:26  –  “Woe to you when all men speak well of you…”  –  In other words, “woe to you when you have no opposition.”  See 1 Peter 4:14 (“If you are reviled for the name of Christ…”

Luke 6:35  –  “But love your enemies…”

*Luke 9:50  –  “‘…he who is not against you is for you.'”

Luke 21:14-16  –  “…I will give you utterance and wisdom which none of your opponents will be able to resist or refute…”

*Philippians 1:27-30  –  “…in no way alarmed by your opponents–which is a sign of destruction for them, but of salvation for you…experiencing the same conflict

2 Timothy 2:24-26  –  “…patient when wronged, with gentleness correcting those who are in opposition, if perhaps God may grant them repentance…”

2 Timothy 3:8-9  –  “Just as Jannes and Jambres opposed Moses, so these men also oppose the truth…”

2 Timothy 4:14-15  –  “…he vigorously opposed our teaching.”

*Titus 1:7-9  –  “…so that he will be able both to exhort in sound doctrine and to refute those who contradict.”

Titus 2:6-8  –  “…so that the opponent will be put to shame, having nothing bad to say about us.”

*1 Peter 5:8  –  “…Your adversary, the devil…”

1 John 2:18  –  “…antichristantichrists…”

1 John 2:22  –  “…antichrist…”

1 John 4:2, 3  –  “…antichrist…”

2 John 1:7  –  “…antichrist.”


Psalm 27:3  –  “Though a host encamp against me, My heart will not fear; Though war arise against me, In spite of this I shall be confident.”

Isaiah 54:15-17  –  “If anyone fiercely assails you it will not be from Me…”

Micah 7:6 (quoted in Matthew 10:34-36 above)  –  “For son treats father contemptuously, daughter rises up against her mother, daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law; a man’s enemies are the men of his own household.”
