Faith Is Being Persuaded

This is a subsidiary post of Defining Faith.

Luke 16:31  –  If this text had read “believed” in place of “be persuaded” (i.e. “they will not believe even if someone rises from the dead”) would you consider the meaning to have been any different?  Thus to be persuaded by a message is to believe that message.

Acts 17:2, 3, 4  –  Compare this reaction in Thessalonica to the one which occurred shortly thereafter in Berea (Acts 17:10, 11, 12), noticing how “persuaded” is used in Acts 17:4 in the same way that “believed” is used in Acts 17:12.

Acts 19:26  –  Were not the ones Paul “persuaded” those who became believers?

Acts 27:11  –  Where the NASB reads that the centurion was “more persuaded by” the pilot and the captain, the King James version (Acts 27:11 KJV) reads that he “believed” – indicating the general equivalence of meaning.

Acts 28:23  –  “…and he was explaining to them by solemnly testifying about the kingdom of God and trying to persuade them concerning Jesus…”
Acts 28:24  –  “Some were being persuaded by the things spoken, but others would not believe.”  –  We see here that “being persuaded” and “would not believe” are antonymous phrases, thus making “being persuaded” equivalen to “believing.”
Acts 28:24 KJV  –  “And some believed the things which were spoken, and some believed not.”  –  Comparing the NASB to the KJV we see that “being persuaded” and “believed” are synonymous phrases.
Acts 28:24 ESV  –  “And some were convinced by what he said, but others disbelieved.”  –  See Faith Is Being Convinced.
Acts 28:24 NIV  –  “Some were convinced by what he said, but others would not believe.” –  See Faith Is Being Convinced.

Romans 8:38, 39  –  “For I am convinced that…”
Romans 8:38-39 KJV  –  “For I am persuaded, that…”
Romans 8:38-39 ESV  –  “For I am sure that…”
Romans 8:38-39 GNT  –  “For I am certain that…”
