Vocabulary of Righteousness

If we are to understand the concept of righteousness from God’s point of view, we must learn the words He uses through His apostles and prophets in the Scriptures when this subject is in view.  Here then are some of those various words.  The list includes synonyms, antonyms, and well as words which have similar though not identical meaning.

duty  –  1 Corinthians 7:3

evil (v. good)  –  Hebrews 5:14; *** Numbers 32:13

godliness (v. ungodliness)

godly (v. ungodly)

good (v. evil) –  Hebrews 5:14; James 4:17 (see marginal note) *** Micah 6:8

iniquity

injustice  –  Romans 9:14; *** Zephaniah 3:5

justice

lawlessness 

licentiousness  –  Jude 1:4

moral excellence  –  2 Peter 1:5

obedience

ought  –  Luke 18:1; 1 John 2:6; 3:16; 4:11

right (v. wrong)  –  2 Corinthians 13:7; James 4:17 (marginal note says “Or, good”)
