Concern for the Poor

Concern for the poor is an aspect of generosity – generosity being the godly alternative to greed and the love of money.  Concern for the poor is most easily sustained in an atmosphere of contentment.

(An asterisk at the beginning of the citation indicates a non-explicit reference to “poor” or “poverty.”)

Matthew 6:2-3 NASB  –  “So when you give to the poor…”
Matthew 6:2-3 KJV  –  “Therefore when thou doest thine alms…”  –  Comparing the King James version to the New American Standard Bible version just above you can see that “doing alms” is “giving to the poor.”

John 12:4-8  –  “…concerned about the poor…the poor you always have with you…”

Acts 24:17  – “…I came to bring alms to my nation…”
Acts 24:17 NIV  –  “…I came…to bring my people gifts for the poor…”
Acts 24:17 NET  –  “…I came to bring to my people gifts for the poor…”  –  An in the case with the two translations of Matthew 6:2-3 above, these various translations of Acts 24:17 indicate to us that “giving to the poor” and “doing alms” mean the same thing.

Galatians 2:10 –  “They only asked us to remember the poor–the very thing I also was eager to do.”

Psalm 41:1  –  “How blessed is he who considers the helpless…”
Psalm 41:1 KJV  –  “Blessed is he that considereth the poor…”
Psalm 41:1 ESV  –  “Blessed is the one who considers the poor…”

Proverbs 14:21  –  “…happy is he who is gracious to the poor.”

Proverbs 14:31  –  “He who oppresses the poor taunts his Maker, but he who is gracious to the needy honors Him.”

Proverbs 17:5  –  “He who mocks the poor taunts his Maker; he who rejoices at calamity will not go unpunished.”

Proverbs 19:17  –  “One who is gracious to a poor man lends to the Lord…”

Daniel 4:27  –  “…break away now…from your iniquities by showing mercy to the poor…”
