Prayer and Righteousness

When we approach God in prayer, He is mindful of our behavior.  We shouldn’t think that we can live “any ole way” we want and then expect a favorable hearing when we come before Him.  Remember also that faith is righteousness.

John 9:31  –  ““We know that God does not hear sinners; but if anyone is God-fearing and does His will, He hears him.”

Acts 10:34, 35  –  “the man who fears Him and does what is right is welcome to Him.”

Hebrews 5:7  –  “He was heard because of His piety.”

James 4:2, 3  –  “You do not have because you do not ask.  You ask and do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives, so that you may spend it on your pleasures.”  –  The NASB marginal note says that “on your pleasures” is literally “in your pleasures.”

James 5:16  –  “The effective prayer of a righteous man can accomplish much.”

1 Peter 3:12 (quoting Psalm 34:15, 16 below)  –  “For the eyes of the Lord are toward the righteous, And His ears attend to their prayer, But the face of the Lord is against those who do evil.”

1 John 3:21, 22  –  “whatever we ask we receive from Him, because we keep His commandments and do the things that are pleasing in His sight.”


2 Chronicles 7:13, 14  –  “and My people who are called by My name humble themselves and pray and seek My face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, will forgive their sin and will heal their land.”

Psalm 34:15, 16 (quoted in 1 Peter 3:12 above)  –  “The eyes of the Lord are toward the righteous and His ears are open to their cry.  The face of the Lord is against evildoers,
To cut off the memory of them from the earth.”

Psalm 34:17  –  “The righteous cry, and the Lord hears”

Psalm 84:11  –  “…No good thing does He withhold from those who walk uprightly.”

Proverbs 15:8 – “The sacrifice of the wicked is an abomination to the LORD, but the prayer of the upright is His delight.”  –  Compare with Proverbs 28:9 below.

Proverbs 28:9  –  “He who turns away his ear from listening to the law, even his prayer is an abomination.”  –  Compare with Proverbs15:8 above.

Zechariah 7:13  –  “And just as He called and they would not listen, so they called and I would not listen,” says the Lord of hosts;”
