Born of the Spirit

This is the new birth – that birth from the dead which God promises.  It is eternal life.

John 1:12, 13 –  “to become children of God…born…of God”

John 3:1-15 (especially John 3:6 and John 3:3, 7, 12)  –  Marginal notes on John 3:3 and John 3:7 state that an alternate translation for “born again” is “born from above.”  Both meanings apply.

1 Corinthians 15:20  –  “…the first fruits of those who are asleep.”

1 Corinthians 15:23  –  “…Christ the first fruits…”

1 Corinthians 15:45  –  “…The last Adam became a life-giving spirit.”  –  This “life-giving spirit” is the “seed” of 1 Peter 1:23 and “the firstborn from the dead” of Revelation 1:5.

2 Corinthians 5:17  –  “if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creature”  –  Compare with James 1:18 below.

Hebrews 12:9  –  “shall we not much rather be subject to the Father of spirits, and live?”

James 1:18  –  “He brought us forth by the word of truth, so that we would be a kind of first fruits among His creatures”  –  Compare with 2 Corinthians 5:17 above.

1 Peter 1:3  –  “God…has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead”

1 Peter 1:23  –  “you have been born again not of seed which is perishable but imperishable, that is, through the living and enduring word of God”  –  This “imperishable seed” is the “life-giving spirit” of 1 Corinthians 15:45 above.

1 Peter 2:2  –  Having been born again (see 1 Peter 1:3, 23 as context for 1 Peter 2:2), we are to grow from infancy to adulthood.

1 John 2:29 –  “…you know that everyone also who practices righteousness is born of Him.”

1 John 3:9  –  “No one who is born of God practices sin, because His seed abides in him; and he cannot sin, because he is born of God.”

1 John 4:7  –  “…everyone who loves is born of God and knows God.”

1 John 5:1  –  “Whoever believes that Jesus is the Christ is born of God, and whoever loves the Father loves the child born of Him.”

1 John 5:4  –  “For whatever is born of God overcomes the world…”

1 John 5:18  –  “We know that no one who is born of God sins; but He who was born of God keeps him, and the evil one does not touch him.”

Revelation 1:5  –  “and from Jesus Christ, the faithful witness, the firstborn of the dead…”  –  He is the firstborn from the dead and we are the “subsequent” born from the dead.  This “firstborn from the dead” is the “life-giving spirit” of 1 Corinthians 15:45 above.
