The “world” can be thought of as “creation without God.”  The same can be said of that which is “flesh” (see the link above).

  1. Hey Mike,

Sorry again. Can you ask me what is meant by this verse:

John 12:25 – “He who loves his life loses it, and he who hates his life in this world will keep it to life eternal”

What does it mean to hate ones life?

Thanks for your time. It is very appreciated.

    God bless.

  2. The meaning is similar to what you see in 1 John 2:15-17. That is, we live in a world that, generally speaking, wants to ignore God – shut Him out.

In shutting God out, people seek to please themselves rather than please their Creator. They seek the desires of their flesh instead of doing what is right. They seek popularity and celebrity with people instead of seeking the approval of God. They seek earthly treasures instead of seeking to be rich toward God. They live according to pleasure instead of according to principle. They seek to have authority over others instead of seeking themselves to be under the authority of God.

This is the way of the world, and we cannot be friends with it (James 4:4).

Therefore, let us hate our lives in this world. That is, let us hate the pursuit of fleshly pleasure, earthly glory, and worldly power. Instead, let us pursue truth, love, and kindness in the way that Jesus did. Because He hated His life in this world, He was given the joy of serving God on the earth (even when He suffered for it) and the reward of unending honor in heaven for the job well done He had completed (Hebrews 12:1-2).
