The Names of Satan

This post is about that spiritual being most commonly called “the devil” or “Satan.”  The word “satan” means “adversary” (see 1 Peter 5:8 below).  He is known by a variety of biblical terms, which is demonstrated by this list.

John 10:1  –  “…he who does not enter by the door into the fold of the sheep, but climbs up some other way, he is a thief and a robber.”  –  Regarding “thief,” see John 10:10.  Regarding “robber,” see Matthew 21:13 (paralleled in Mark 11:17 and Luke 19:46; quoting Jeremiah 7:11).

1 Corinthians 10:10  –  “Nor grumble, as some of them did, and were destroyed by the destroyer.”  –  Correlate with John 10:10 and 1 Corinthians 5:5.

2 Corinthians 2:11  –  Satan

2 Corinthians 4:4  –  the god of this world

2 Corinthians 6:15  –  Belial (NASB marginal note says “Gr., Beliar”)
