Ignorance

The following verses describe ignorance using a variety of expressions.  Note that some ignorance is the result of insufficient exposure to knowledge, while some ignorance is a result of acquired knowledge having been forgotten.  And then there is the ignorance that is willful, as when men choose to ignore God.

An asterisk denotes use of a synonymous expression for “ignorance” or “ignorant.”

*Luke 23:34  –  “Father, forgive them; for they do not know what they are doing”

*John 4:22  –  “You worship what you do not know; we worship what we know”  –  Compare with Acts 17:23 below)

*John 4:32  –  “I have food to eat that you do not know about

*John 9:25  –  “”Whether He is a sinner, I do not know; one thing I do know, that though I was blind, now I see”

*Acts 17:23  –  “‘TO AN UNKNOWN GOD’…what you worship in ignorance”  –  Compare with John 4:22 above)

*Romans 2:4  –  “not knowing that the kindness of God leads you to repentance”

*1 Corinthians 8:7  –  “not all men have this knowledge

*1 Corinthians 8:10  –  “For if someone sees you, who have knowledge, dining in an idol’s temple, will not his conscience, if he is weak, be strengthened to eat things sacrificed to idols?”  –  Obviously, the “someone” is without knowledge.

Ephesians 4:17, 18, 19  –  “…being darkened in their understanding, excluded from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in them…”

*1 Thessalonians 4:13  –  “we do not want you to be uninformed, brethren”

1 Timothy 1:13  –  “I was shown mercy because I acted ignorantly in unbelief”

2 Timothy 2:23 – “But refuse foolish and ignorant speculations, knowing that they produce quarrels.”

Hebrews 5:1, 2  –  “he can deal gently with the ignorant and misguided

Hebrews 9:6, 7  –  “…which he offers for himself and for the sins of the people committed in ignorance.”

1 Peter 2:15 – “For such is the will of God that by doing right you may silence the ignorance of foolish men.”

*2 Peter 2:21  –  “it would be better for them not to have known the way of righteousness”

*Judges 16:20  –  “he did not know that the LORD had departed from him”

Ezra 7:25  –  “you may teach anyone who is ignorant of them.”  –  Compare to Romans 2:17ff.

*Job 42:3  –  “I have declared that which I did not understand, Things too wonderful for me, which I did not know.”

Psalm 73:22  –  “I was senseless and ignorant; I was like a beast before You”

*Psalm 82:5  –  “They do not know nor do they understand; they walk about in darkness…”

*Proverbs 1:22  –  “…and fools hate knowledge?”

*Proverbs 4:19 – “…they do not know over what they stumble.”

*Proverbs 19:27  –  “Cease listening, my son, to discipline, And you will stray from the words of knowledge.”

*Ecclesiastes 5:1  –  “Guard your steps as you go to the house of God and draw near to listen rather than to offer the sacrifice of fools; for they do not know they are doing evil.”

*Isaiah 1:3  –  “An ox knows its owner, and a donkey its master’s manger, but Israel does not know…”

*Jeremiah 4:22  –  “They know Me not…to do good they do not know.”

*Hosea 4:6  –  “My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge…Because you have rejected knowledge…Since you have forgotten the law of your God.”
