The New Testament is the collective extant written testimony of the apostles of Jesus.  Through it, we have our access to the Old Testament…and all that God has promised to those who love Him.

The New Testament is the apostles’ testimony, the apostolic word, the apostolic deposit.  Just as the Old Testament is “the prophetic word” (2 Peter 1:19), so the New Testament is “the apostolic word.”

We have every reason to believe the apostles, for they are to Jesus on earth what the prophets were to God in heaven: Luke 24:25; 2 Chronicles 20:20 (see notes on this verse below); John 6:29.

I am using “synonym” in a very loose sense.  That is, I’m not trying to say that every one of these phrases is speaking about the New Testament, but rather that there is a way to see each phrase as having application to the New Testament.  It is a way of helping us appreciate more just what we have in the New Testament documents.  They are all the writings we have from those whom Jesus personally sent to teach us about Himself and His ways.

2 Chronicles 20:20  –  “…put your trust in the Lord your trust in the Lord your God and you will be established.  Put your trust in His prophets and succeed.”  –  We put our trust in the Lord by putting our trust in what His spokesmen have said.  Thus Jesus saying “My word” (e.g. John 8:31) = “their word“(e.g. John 17:20).  Thus also what Jesus commanded (Matthew 28:20) is what the apostles taught (1 Corinthians14:37).  Thus also John 17:20 speaks of the same dynamic as does 1 Thessalonians 2:13.  Thus also John 5:39-47; 17:20; Acts 20:32; and Revelation 22:21 all speak to the same dynamic:  God speaks to us through Jesus through the apostles through the New Testament.  Further to this point, see We Believe God by Believing Those Whom He Has Sent.
