The presence of humility is the absence of pride, and vice versa.
(An asterisk at the beginning of the citation below indicates that humility or one of its cognates is implied rather than explicit in the verse.)
Romans 12:3 – “not to think more highly of himself than he ought to think; but to think so as to have sound judgment
Philippians 2:3 – “Do nothing from selfishness or empty conceit, but with humility of mind regard one another as more important than yourselves”
Colossians 2:18 – “inflated without cause by his fleshly mind”
1 Timothy 6:17 – “not to be conceited”
1 Peter 5:5, 6, 7
Psalm 131:1 – With this kind of thinking, it’s easier to adopt the “perplexed, but not despairing” posture of 2 Corinthians 4:8. (I should not expect to understand things I’m not capable of understanding or don’t need to understand at this point in my spiritual life. To demand otherwise is to depart from humility.)
