In this post, “before Him” means positionally before, not chronologically before.  That is, we’re talking about being where God can see us.

That “before someone” = “in someone’s sight” is a reasonable inference, but it is confirmed by the NASB marginal note on Luke 15:18 which gives “before you” as an alternate translation for “in your sight.”

The truth is that we all live before Him because “there is nothing hidden from His sight” (Hebrews 4:13).  We can choose to acknowledge this truth – which is to live by faith.  Or we can choose to ignore this truth – which is to live in unbelief.

Another way of saying this is that by faith we acknowledge that the Lord is before us.

Matthew 6:1 – Jesus is, of course, implying that we should practice our righteousness “before God” rather than “before men.”

Luke 1:74, 75  –  “…might serve Him without fear, in holiness and righteousness before Him all our days.”

Acts 10:33  –  “…Now then, we are all here present before God to hear all that you have been commanded by the Lord.”

Romans 14:22  –  “The faith which you have, have as your own conviction before God…”

Galatians 1:20  –  The NASB marginal note on “I assure you before God that” reads “Lit., behold before God.”

1 John 3:19, 20  –  “…and will assure our heart before Him in whatever our heart condemns us…”


Genesis 17:1  –  “…Walk before Me, and be blameless.”

2 Samuel 6:5  –  “…before the Lord…”
2 Samuel 6:14  –  “…before the Lord…”
2 Samuel 6:16  –  “…before the Lord…”
2 Samuel 6:17  –  “…before the Lord.”

2 Samuel 6:21  –  “…before the Lord.”

2 Samuel 7:18 (same as 1 Chronicles 17:16 below)  –  “Then David the king went in and sat before the LORD, and he said…”

1 Kings 10:8  –  “…how blessed are these your servants who stand before you continually and hear your wisdom.”

2 Kings 5:15, 16  –  “…’As the LORD lives, before whom I stand, I will take nothing.’…”

1 Chronicles 17:16 (same as 2 Samuel 7:18 above)  –  “Then David the king went in and sat before the LORD and said…”

Esther 1:11  –  As King Ahasuerus called for Esther to come before him and his court, so we the church are called to walk to walk before Christ and His heavenly court.

Psalm 95:2  –  “Let us come before His presence with thanksgiving…”

Psalm 100:2  –  “…come before Him with joyful singing.”

Jeremiah 7:9, 10  –  “…then come and stand before Me in this house…”

Jeremiah 15:19  –  “…before Me you will stand…”

Hosea 6:2  –  “…that we may live before Him.”
