The Preexistence of Christ

This is a subsidiary post of Christ.

Here are verses from the apostles and prophets which tend to indicate that Christ preexisted (that is, existed before) His conception on earth as a human being by the Holy Spirit in the womb of Mary.

An asterisk indicates a reference to God’s creating the world through Christ.  These include not only those verses which explicitly say that Christ was the agent through whom God created, but also those that refer to Christ’s existence before creation.

A double asterisk indicates those verses where Jesus is referred to simply as “the Lord,” implying a prexistence as “the Lord.”

*John 1:1-3

John 1:9  –  If He “came into the world” He must have come from somewhere…and in that somewhere He had to have existed.  (We know, of course, that the somewhere is heaven.)

*John 1:10

John 1:14  –  The “Word” that became flesh is the same “Word” of John 1:1-3 above.  If He “became” flesh, He must have been something else before that.

John 1:15  –  We know from Luke 1:35-36 that John the Baptist was conceived six months prior to Jesus being conceived.  Thus John is referring here to Jesus’ prexistence.  This thought is expressed again in John 1:30 below.

John 1:18

John 1:30  –  This thought was also expressed in John 1:15 above.

John 3:11-13  –  This thought is echoed in John 3:32 below.)

John 3:17  –  If God “sent” Messiah, then Messiah must have existed prior to arriving at the destination.  Otherwise, why would Messiah need to be sent?  (By the way, there are many references to Messiah being sent, such as John 17:18, 21, 23, 25 – too many to catalog)

John 3:31

John 3:32  –  This is an echo of John 3:11-13 above, in which reference was made to what Messiah had seen and heard, and therefore about which He could testify.

John 6:62

John 8:58

John 12:41-42  –  For Isaiah to have seen the glory of Jesus, Jesus would have to existed in Isaiah’s time.

*John 17:24

*Proverbs 8:22-31

*Proverbs 30:4
