Bible Notes on “The Wrong Way to Stop Being a Hypocrite”

The scripture references below go with today’s post of A Nonchurchgoer’s Guide to Jesus and His Kingdom.

Matthew 23:1-3  (The definition of hypocrisy can be inferred from this verse:  “saying things without doing them.”  Note, however, that Jesus found no fault with the standard they were saying – just their poor performance against that standard.  Therefore, the solution for the Pharisees was to live up to the standard they were declaring – not give up the standard.)

Psalm 15:4  (This sort of person keeps his word, even when it hurts him to do so.  Think of someone who makes a promise, then finds it more difficult to keep than he thought it would be, but, in spite of whatever frustration he encounters, keeps it anyway.  This kind of person is a blessing to God’s heart.)

If you are familiar with the Bible, or if you want to hear more from it, you may want to read one of my other blogs: A Bible Reader’s Guide to Jesus and His Kingdom.

Any quotations of Scripture are taken from the NASB, unless otherwise noted.
