The Bible’s Intolerance of Fear (Worry, Anxiety)

Or, “Do Not Fear!”
Or, “No Fear”

It is remarkable how intolerant the apostles and prophets were when it came to the fears to which we are so accustomed: worry, anxiety, intimidation, and so on.  The only fear which they tolerated was one which they actually cultivated:  the fear of God.

Notice then in the verses that follow how emphatic were God’s spokesmen about giving fear no place whatsoever [emphasis added in bold].

Matthew 6:25  –  “do not be anxious”  –  as opposed to, say, “do not be excessively anxious” or “be only moderately anxious”

Matthew 8:26  –  “Why are you afraid?”  –  Apparently, Jesus saw no basis for fear in His disciples, even though they had been facing a storm that in their professional opinion constituted life-threatening force.

Mark 4:40  –  “Why are you afraid?”  (See Matthew 8:26 above.)

John 14:27  –  “Let not your heart be…fearful.”

Philippians 4:6  –  “Be anxious for nothing.”

2 Timothy 1:7  –  “God has not given us a spirit of timidity”  –  This means that timidity comes from some source other than God.

1 Peter 3:6  –  “Do what is right without being frightened by any fear.”

1 Peter 5:7  –  “Casting all your anxiety on Him.”

1 John 4:18  –  “There is no fear in love; but perfect love casts out fear, because fear involves punishment, and the one who fears is not perfected in love.”


Deuteronomy 1:17  –  “You shall not fear man.”

Joshua 1:9  –  “Do not tremble or be dismayed.”

2 Kings 17:35  –  “You shall not fear other gods.”

Psalm 23:4  –  “Even though…I fear no evil.”

Psalm 27:1  –  “…whom shall I fear…whom shall I dread?”

Psalm 34:4  –  “The Lord…delivered me from all my fears.”

Psalm 37:8  –  “…do not fret…”

Psalm 112:7  –  “He will not fear evil tidings…”
Psalm 112:8  –  “His heart is upheld, he will not fear…”

Psalm 118:6  –  “…I will not fear…”

Isaiah 8:12  –  “…you are not to fear what they fear or be in dread of it.”
Isaiah 8:13

Isaiah 35:4  –  “Fear not”  –  as opposed to, say, “fear some”

Isaiah 54:4  –  “Fear not”  –  as opposed to, say, “fear a moderate amount”

Jeremiah 17:8  –  “…will not fear…will not be anxious…”

Jeremiah 30:10  –  “Fear not”  –  as opposed to, say, “fear just a tad”
