What did we inherit from the prior age? Most notably, we inherited the Scriptures of the Prophets and the Apostles – that is, the Bible.
We can even say it this way: “What did we inherit from the biblical age? The Bible!”
Through this written wisdom, we have access to the mind of God regarding us. What a treasure!
Let us not “let go of our inheritance” (Jeremiah 17:4). Through the Scriptures we learn of all those things we have inherited from the age that preceded this one – that is, what the age of monotheism inherited from the age of polytheism. If we hold fast the Scriptures we shall inherit a blessing and not a curse (Jeremiah 17:5-8).
Through the Bible, we learn that the Bible is only a part of our inheritance. There is much, much more for us in this inheritance. In this sense, the Bible is not so much our inheritance as it is the map to the treasure of our inheritance. This inheritance begins with the knowledge of the Lord Himself (John 5:39, 40).
Therefore, we are seeking to draw forth from the Bible that which applies to today. It is an ancient text of timeless truths for a modern age. We extract those timeless truths (Jeremiah 15:19). We are seeking the essentials of the Christian life in this age – the sine qua non of true Christianity. That is, we are seeking to understand Christianity as the Lord teaches it.
