Faith Is Righteousness

This is a subsidiary post to Faith.
It is also a subsidiary post of Righteousness.

To believe in Jesus is to obey Jesus (Faith Is a Matter of Obedience).  Faith is not optional in our life with God.  It is something He commands us to do:  believe in Him.  In fact, it is the most fundamental and important thing He commands us to do.

Faith is not something we practice in addition to righteousness.  Faith is the foundational element of our righteousness before God (Faith Is Foundational to the Christian Life), for He has made it so.  That is, faith is the right thing to do; it’s what we ought to do in response to what God has done for us.  And everything else we do in life ought to be an outworking of that faith.

The following verses either associate faith with obedience or with righteousness.  They amount to the same thing, for to obey is to do right.

John 3:36  –  “believe the Son” = “obey the Son”

John 16:9  –  “concerning sin, because they do not believe in Me”  –  As not believing is sin, so believing is righteous.  Thus faith is righteousness.

Acts 6:7  – The priests became “obedient to the faith.”  That is, “the faith” is something to which one becomes “obedient.”

Romans 1:5  –  “the obedience of faith”  –  There are three such expressions in the New Testament; see all three at Faith Is a Matter of Obedience.

Romans 1:17 (quoting Habakkuk 2:4 below)  –  “the righteousness of God is revealed from faith to faith” and “THE RIGHTEOUS man SHALL LIVE BY FAITH.”

Romans 3:21-22  –  “the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ”

Romans 4:13  –  “the righteousness of faith”

Romans 14:23  –  “whatever is not from faith is sin”  –  We know that “sin” is the opposite of righteousness; therefore, faith is righteousness.

Romans 16:26  – “the obedience of faith”  –  See note on Romans 1:5 above.

Galatians 2:20, 21  –  Paul is declaring that righteousness does not come through the Law but rather through “living by faith in the Son of God.”

Galatians 3:11 (quoting Habakkuk 2:4 below)  – “THE RIGHTEOUS MAN SHALL LIVE BY FAITH.”

Philippians 3:9  –  See that “a righteousness…through faith in Christ” is “the righteousness which comes from God on the basis of faith.”

Hebrews 3:12  –  The opposite of “an evil, unbelieving heart” would be “a good, believing heart.”

Hebrews 3:18, 19  –  This passage equates “disobedient” with “unbelief.”  Conversely then, obedience would equate to faith.

Hebrews 10:38 (quoting Habakkuk 2:4 below)  –  “BUT MY RIGHTEOUS ONE SHALL LIVE BY FAITH”

Hebrews 11:6  –  “without faith it is impossible to please [Him]”  –  Of course, “pleasing God” is synonymous with “doing right,” which is, of course, righteousness.

Hebrews 11:8  –  “By faith Abraham…obeyed…”

1 John 3:23  –  “This is His commandment, that we believe”  –  Also, consider this verse in the light of 2 Peter 2:21.
