Bible Notes on “Institutional Religion Is Worthless”

2 Corinthians 4:5 (Note that Paul was promoting the Lord and not himself or some institution.)

Acts 20:29-31 (Note that these leaders of whom Paul speaks will be seeking to draw disciples after themselves instead of to the Lord.  Paul is prophesying the behavior of institutional religion.  Some of its ministers are well-meaning, but that does not change the fact that they are a part of system that draws people to itself instead of to God.)

Matthew 11:28-30 (Come to Jesus alone, forsaking every institution and every other object of worship.)

  1. Yes, but not just institutional religion. In fact, religion itself comes from those in power. Christianity can survive only when it gets rid of religious cloak.

    1. People define religion in different ways. Even the Bible says, “This is pure and undefiled religion…to visit orphans and widows in their distress, and keep oneself unstained by the world” (James 1:27). Surely you wouldn’t be opposed to religion of that kind.

As for any kind of religion that gives power to human beings, however, it is indeed not of God.

For this reason I speak against organized (or institutional) religion, but not religion per se.
