See Luke 14:26-35 to see how Jesus destroys the notion that we can follow Him as a group. (This was a big reason why some Jews would not believe in Him – they treasured their group identity more than their individual relationship with God. For this same reason some churchgoers today won’t follow Him.)
See the beginning verses of Psalm 34 which describe how the praise of God from one person affects another person – if the second person is humble in heart.
